In late summer of 2000, Kevin and I began a charity fundraiser football pool, based on the results of National Football League games.
The format of the pool was to be very simple. Pick one winning NFL team (no point spread) each week. And you can't pick the same team twice. If the team that you picked loses, you're out. This would be a "last man standing" pool, and would run until only one person remained.
We decided that a portion of the prize money would be donated to worthy charities. Just prior to starting the pool, Kevin's brother, Norb had past away due to kidney disease. Since Kevin and I have been friends since childhood, we decided that the first donation from our pool be given to The Kidney Foundation.
We then decided that the winner of the pool would select the charity for the following year's pool.
Since 2000, we have distributed $2,260.00 in donations amongst the following charities:
The Kidney Foundation
Coaches vs. Cancer
Tremendous Teens of Western New York
The Elizabeth Stroman Rittling Fund
Gilda's Club of WNY
The V Foundation for Cancer Research
Mother of Divine Grace Roman Catholic Church
The Depew Boys and Girls Club
The Variety Club of Buffalo
Dreams From the Heart Camp
Wounded Warriors Project
Wings Flight of Hope
Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation
Last year's winner has selected the SPCA as the 2021 charity recipient.
